Frequently Asked Questions

Here are some answers to questions military families often have. If you don’t see the information you need here, reach out to our enrollment center for help.

Should I enroll in a K12-powered school using my state of legal residence or my current duty station?

To enroll at TOPS, you must have Texas residency, even if your family is not physically in the state at the time of enrollment. You will need to submit your Military PCS orders during the enrollment process.

How do I transfer schools between states?

If you begin the school year with TOPS and receive PCS orders at any point during the year, you can remain enrolled with TOPS for the rest of the school year by submitting your PCS orders. When you’re ready to transfer, simply complete an application for the K12-powered school in your new state. We have an approved student transfer process and will guide you through the steps. Explore what K12-powered schools are available in your new state.

Will my child have options to engage and socialize with other students?

If we are out-of-state at the time of required state testing, are we required to return for the test?

The state of TX does not allow for exemptions from state testing for any reason. However, with a PCS order, TOPS will not withdraw your student due to absence from STAAR/EOC testing.

For high school students, the State of Texas requires passing scores in 5 mandatory End-of-Course Exams: Algebra 1, English 1, English 2, US History, and Biology. If you are out-of-state and unable to return for the typical May administration, make-ups will be offered each subsequent June and December.
